Whole, a book written by Dr. Campbell talks about the science behind nutrition. The book starts off by stating a problem the United States faces: health which is actually shocking because according to Campbell: "The United States spends more money per capita on "health" care than any country on earth" but compared to the health care world wide, they "rank near the bottom" (page 4). This is terrible, because millions and millions of dollars are being "invested" for nothing. So what is the cause of this awful state of health? Simple: obesity, diabetes and hypertension. According to the CDC report, "obese individuals increased from 13 percent of the U.S. population in 1962 to 34 percent in 2008". This, should worry all americans because a majority of the percentage is found in young age like children, teenagers and young adults. Besides obesity, diabetes has also increased throughout time: "Type 2 diabetes rate doubled from 1980 to 2012, from 2.5 percent to 6.9 percent of the population". With these statistics you might be thinking that 6.9 percent is not to worry at all but I find it hard to believe that in a short period of time the population doubled and if its going at this rate, it will be sooner more than later when almost 50 percent of the population has this disease. Now, a "fast" and simple solution to all these problems is nutrition: proper and healthy nutrition. This book shows us the importance of sustaining a well balanced plant based diet, but not a diet of short period of time, it introduces a lifestyle.
